Attempt all the questions

1.   Read the following poem and do the activities that follow:

The Chimney Sweeper

When my mother died I was very young,

And my father sold me while yet my tongue

Could scarcely cry 'weep! 'weep! 'weep! 'weep!

So your chimneys I sweep, and in soot I sleep.

There's little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head,

That curled like a lamb's back, was shaved: so I said,

"Hush, Tom! never mind it, for when your head's bare,

You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair."

And so he was quiet; and that very night,

As Tom was a-sleeping, he had such a sight, -

That thousands of sweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned, and Jack,

Were all of them locked up in coffins of black.

And by came an angel who had a bright key,

And he opened the coffins and set them all free;

Then down a green plain leaping, laughing, they run,

And wash in a river, and shine in the sun.

Then naked and white, all their bags left behind,

They rise upon clouds and sport in the wind;

And the angel told Tom, if he'd be a good boy,

He'd have God for his father, and never want joy.

And so Tom awoke; and we rose in the dark,

And got with our bags and our brushes to work.

Though the morning was cold, Tom was happy and warm;

So if all do their duty they need not fear harm

Movie Review: “2012” is a Perfect Disaster

Director: Roland Emmerich

Producers: HaraldKloser, Mark Gordon and Larry J. Franco

Script writers: HaraldKlose and Roland Emmerich

Starring: John Cusack, Amanda Peet, ChiwetelEjiofor, Woody Harrelson

Release: November13, 2009

Language: English

Budget: $200 million

If a film critic awards four stars to a movie directed by Roland Emmerich, will the world come to an end? That’s a question the ancient Mayans never asked, but it’s the one facing me after the enormously satisfying, amazingly accomplished, reprehensible yet irresistible “2012”, the greatest achievement in Emmerich’s long, profitable career as a destroyer of the world.

Starting with the long-held misapprehension that the Mayan calendar picks “2012” as the date of humanity’s doom, Emmerich fleshes out that bit of pseudo history with some pseudo science. “2012” takes the disaster movie once content simply to threaten the Earth with a comet, or blow up the White House to its natural conclusion, the literal end of the world. Other movies have explosions; “2012” has an atom bomb size detonation that wipes Yellowstone off the map. Other movies have earthquakes; “2012” sends California sinking, in flames into the sea. Other movies kill thousands; “2012” kills zillions without breaking a sweat.

So what makes “2012” a four-star movie? It gets everything right. The actors are right: John Cusack as a protagonist, Amanda Peet as his wife, ChiwetelEjiofor as a scientist. The story telling is right. You will never be bored. And the dialogue is right: a rich blend of wise crack and cheese, with a few moist-eyed goodbyes sprinkled here and there for good measure. Most important, the special effects are so right. In fact, they are incredible. Emmerich is an expert of a panoramic disaster. Power lines snapping in an earthquake, sparks flashing like distant fireworks; Honolulu on fire; mournful giraffes in slings, air lifted by helicopters through the snowy Himalayas.

Is “2012” art? Absolutely not! It reminds us that cinema exists not only to mark art but also to expertly create sensation like no other medium. It is certainly the best movie of its kind ever made. This is the way the world ends: with a bang.

Bogati wins marathon for Nepal after 24 years

THREE GOLDS, ONE SILVER, THREE BRONZE MEDALS REVIVE ATHLETICS

MAHESH ACHARYA

Kathmandu, December 7

Nepali athlete Kiran Singh Bogati won marathon gold medal in the 13th South Asian Games here at Dasharath Stadium today.

Bogati finished the 42.195km race in two hours, 21 minutes and 17 seconds to claim marathon’s first gold in 24 years. No Nepali athlete had won the marathon gold since TikaBogati in the 1995 Madras SAF Games.

Kiran Singh Bogati celebrates after winning the men’s marathon during the 13th South Asian Games at Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu, on Saturday.

Kiran’s gold is the fifth in marathon for Nepal. BaikunthaManandhar completed the hat-trick after he won gold medals in the first three editions of the SAF Games, while TikaBogati bagged one in 1995. RajendraBhandari had won the event in 2010 Dhaka SA Games but that was later changed to Road Race because of the organisers’ mistake in measuring the distance. Manandhar holds the SAG record of 2:15.03 set in the third SAF Games in Kolkata in 1987.

Bogati’s gold is Nepal’s third in the ongoing SA Games and seventh overall. SantoshiShrestha won the 10,000m race becoming the first Nepali woman athlete to win gold medal, while Gopi Chandra Parki bagged 5,000m gold.

Thirty-five-year-old Bogati outpaced Indian athlete Jaspal Singh, who claimed silver in 2:22.07, while Nepal’s HomlalShrestha came third in 2:24.31.

Bogati said the gold medal was the result of three years of hard work. “I put in a lot of training and was able to win the race. I owe this gold medal to my colleague Gopi Chandra Parki who inspired me with positive words and I am grateful to APFIGShalendraKhanal for this opportunity,” said Bogati, who had finished third in the eighth National Games last year.

In women’s section, Nepal’s PushpaBhandari claimed silver medal after she finished behind Sri Lankan Vijayaratne, who won gold in 2:41:24. Bhandari came second in 2:50:11, while India’s JyotiGwate was third in 2:52:44.

Nepal ended the athletics campaign on a high as the hosts claimed three gold, one silver and four bronze medals. Nepali athletes had returned with alone bronze medal from the previous edition held in Guwahati three years ago. Olympian Rimal claimed bronze in 5,000m race, while SomBahadurKumal (800m), Tanka Karki (1,500m) and Deepak Adhikari (10,000m) were the other Nepali athletes who finished third.
